With the roads opening, you can now enjoy more of the park easily. Spring is a great time to visit and see the waterfalls of the Yellowstone grand canyon or the geysers of our famous geothermal basins. These were from last week, the famous lower falls of the Yellowstone still tumbling past slowly melting walls of ice and the impressive beehive geyser erupting for it’s once a day show!

Winter in Yellowstone allows the opportunity to not only watch wolves but track them. These fresh prints are from 755m where he crossed the road with his pregnant mate. Those are some big feet!

Shed season! The time is upon us that bull elk like this guy, along with our other resident cervids(moose, deer), are shedding their antlers in preparation for spring.

Paradise Valley, the highway corridor bringing new visitors down to the north entrance in Gardiner, is a hot spot for eagle sightings all winter. Roadkill draws in flocks of ravens and magpies, and usually an eagle or two! This particular shot was caught when a mature Bald Eagle came to challenge a Golden Eagle on a kill.
Here we see the Golden Eagle atop a hillside watching the roadkill, and the Bald Eagle swooping in to challenge his claim. I wouldn’t want to tussle with those talons!

Winter in Yellowstone is an intense season of survival with a unique beauty to be admired. Well worth the visit!

Yellowstone is closed in the winter.

Yellowstone is actually not closed in the winter, but the majority of the park is only reachable by over snow vehicles. The north road between Gardiner and Cooke City is plowed and open for regular vehicle access. It’s the best time to see wolves really, so come check it out! Just make sure your vehicle can handle winter driving first, because the roads can be dangerous. Or take a hired tour with professionals that live and work here on these roads year round!

Grizzly treks through the geyser basin! A mama grizzly and two cubs have been roaming the geyser basins all summer, and I was graced with the chance to capture her tracks here.
Students in our summer ecology program were very eager to see bison and bear tracks so close together in this geothermal landscape!
